In the United States, a certified translation is:

• The original text (in a foreign language)
• The translated text (English translation)
• A notarized, signed statement by the translator, or translation company, stating that the translated text is an accurate and complete translation of the original foreign language text (the translator, or translation company’s signature is notarized by a Notary Public)

The Notary Public seal attests that the signature on the translation is that of the person who signed it. It does not attest to the accuracy of the translation. In other words, it is not necessary to be a ‘certified translator’ to provide a certified translation for official use. There is no mandatory federal or state licensing of translators in the U.S., although the American Translators’ Association (ATA) offers translator certification for certain language translations. ATA certified translators are certified in particular language pairs, and a translator may be certified as an English to Spanish translator, but not as a Spanish to English translator. For this reason, many excellent professional translators in the US are not certified translators.

Certified (notarized) translations are usually legal translations or medical translations required for acceptance by courts, government agencies or insurance companies. Certified translation needs are most common for document translations (contracts and patents, judiciary proceedings, financial documents, immigration papers, customs’ documents, wills, academic degrees …).
