History Transcription

The transcription process refers to the conversion of data from one format into another. This includes, but is not limited to, the conversion of spoken words (audio or video recordings) into text. Transcription can also be the conversion of a written source into another medium (converting printed text into digital format, for example) and can even refer to transcribing mural engravings onto paper.

Any process that involves accurately reproducing data from one format and converting it into another more manageable format for the purpose of documenting and studying history is known as History Transcription.

There are several, often overlapping, categories of History Transcription, including:

  • Oral History Transcription refers to transcribing historical accounts that are spoken, usually as recordings of historically significant human memories (recorded interviews).
  • Documentation Transcription refers to the transcription of old manuscripts and other historically relevant documents for historians, genealogists, students and researchers. Transcripts can be in PDF format, CDs, hard copies, etc.
  • Autobiography Transcription and Biography Transcription serve to preserve the personal life stories of individuals. Today’s technology has made it possible for autobiographies to be recorded in many formats other than writing (analog audio recordings, digital video and audio recordings – even web-based autobiographies and biographies), and the transcription of these recordings usually involves reproducing the information onto a more permanent format.
  • Interview Transcription – a large part of history transcription involves the transcription of recorded interviews. Most, but not all, oral history transcription projects are based on one-to-one interviews, for example.

History can be defined as a record of past events. The transcription process is nothing new to historians. In fact, transcription has always been the means by which events are recorded to create history.
