Verbatim transcription is commonly used for interview transcription, conference transcription, and some types of academic transcriptions. Most transcription companies offer their clients a choice between two levels of verbatim transcription services: - Verbatim Transcription: a 100% accurate transcription of the submitted sound file or recording where nothing is omitted, and no alterations are allowed. This type of transcription service is often preferred for legal transcription (witness statements in court transcriptions) and some types of interview transcription.
- Intelligent Verbatim Transcription: The transcriptionist (or transcription project manager or editor) does a certain degree of editing to make the transcript more intelligible (abbreviations are replaced with full terms, irrelevant words may be eliminated and grammar may be corrected). Transcription service companies may charge a slightly higher fee for this type of verbatim transcription because the transcription process is more time-consuming.
Transcription service companies also provide Intelligent Transcription, which is not verbatim transcription. In this case, the transcriptionist is responsible for editing and proofreading the transcribed work. This type of transcription is used to produce concise, accurate transcripts in text formats, according to client specifications. It is almost always the option selected for academic transcriptions (lectures) and medical dictation transcriptions.
